President Museveni, First Lady Lead National Census Participation

The National Population and Housing Census 2024 commenced with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni participating by answering Census questions in their household before being counted.

Dr. Chris Ndatira Mukiza, the Executive Director and National Census Commissioner at the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, oversaw the enumeration at State Lodge, Nakasero.

President Museveni and the First Lady were enumerated at 12:30 pm by Dr. Vincent Fred Ssenono, the UBOS Head of Department for Demography and Social Statistics.

After the enumeration, President Museveni praised Dr. Mukiza and his team for conducting a comprehensive exercise, highlighting the detailed and comprehensive nature of the questions asked.

Expressing satisfaction with the questions, President Museveni noted their importance for future planning purposes.

He urged Ugandans to cooperate with the enumeration team to ensure essential information is captured for planning purposes.

He discouraged those refusing to be enumerated, emphasizing the necessity of the data for finding solutions to various societal challenges.

The 2024 census, being the first technologically driven (Digital Census), aims to provide an accurate total population count of Uganda on census night.

Dr. Mukiza highlighted that the census will generate baseline data on beneficiaries of government programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM) funds and Emyooga, among others.

Additionally, it will provide day population figures for eleven major cities, including Kampala, Mbarara, Fort Portal, Jinja, and Mbale.

Dr. Ssenono emphasized the significance of the exercise in identifying populations still engaged in subsistence economies, addressing youth unemployment, and supporting persons with disabilities.

The National Census, which began today, is scheduled to conclude on May 19, 2024.
