UBOS Announces Details for Uganda's National Census 2024
The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS),Executive Director Dr. Chris Mukiza on Wednesday unveiled crucial details regarding the forthcoming National Population and Housing Census 2024.
This census happening for to days from the night of May 9th to19th aims to deliver precise and up-to-date demographic, social, and economic insights through a digital platform.
Dr. Mukiza shared that over 114,460 enumerators, including 500 soldiers, alongside 18,483 supervisors, are slated to play instrumental roles in this initiative.
Enumerators are set to receive a total remuneration of 500,000 shillings upon the census’s completion, while supervisors will earn 600,000 shillings. Notably, these payments will be tax-exempt, acknowledged as a form of facilitation to support their involvement.
remarked Dr. Mukiza during a press briefing at Statistics House on Wednesday.
The census will officially commence with a reference night on May 9, 2024, will serve as the baseline for determining residential arrangements and avoid discrepancies in data collection like double counting of persons.
According to Mukiza, UBOS has made arrangements to ensure everyone is counted, including those that will be traveling at night. “If someone is always on the road, we will count them from their buses, and we will give them a card as a confirmation that they have been counted.” he said
UBOS has designed a diverse range of questionnaires to ensure comprehensive coverage, encompassing institutions such as schools, universities, hotels, hospitals, and other key locales. Specialized questionnaires called Floating questionnaire will also cater to transient populations encountered at border points, airports, and transportation hubs like bus and taxi parks. In addition to this, there will be household questionnaires for homes.
The exercise, conducted within standard working hours until 6:30pm, will incorporate stringent identification measures where census officers will be easily identifiable through reflective jackets and official identification cards bearing essential details and QR codes linked to UBOS’s official website for authentication purposes.
Dr. Mukiza said the Census has potential to shape national policies and interventions based on accurate data. He noted that the entire nation is poised to benefit from the outcomes of this monumental initiative.
