Karuma Bridge Closed Due to Deterioration, Alternative Routes Advised
Uganda National Road’s Authority (UNRA) has closed Karuma Bridge citing deteriorated element of the bridge structure making it risky for motorist to use.
In a press statement issued on 3rd May, 2024 by UNRA, the bridge’s concrete deck particularly on the Kampala approach lane have deteriorated this followed the ongoing assessment by the Authorities Engineers.
“ The Uganda National Roads Authority wishes to inform road users that following the ongoing assessment of the Karuma Bridge, it has been established that some elements of that bridge structures have deteriorated.’’ The statement reads in parts.
“The continued exposure of the bridge to the ever-increasing heavy traffic is likely to accelerate its
Deterioration and service ability, if not addressed in time.’’
The statement also indicated that the Karuma Bidge will be closed to all Lorries Traillers and buses from Monday 6th, 2024. Only motorists carrying up to 28 passengers will be allowed to cross the bridge.
The refurbishment of the bridged according to UNRA is anticipated to be completed in a period of three months and it will them be open to all motorists.
Motorist travelling from Kampala heading to Gulu and West Nile are therefore advised to use Luweero- Kafu- Masindi-Paraa(Murchison Falls National Park) to connect to Pakwach or Gulu via Olwiyo and vice- versa for motorist from Gulu/ West Nile.
While motorists from Lira can also use Iganga- Nakalama.Tirinyi-Pallisa-Kumi-Soroti and vice-versa.
However government of Uganda is currently fast-tracking the process to secure funding for the construction of a news bridge at Karuma as a long-term solution.
“We appreciate that this emergency is an inconvenience to all road users, but we argue you to join us in our efforts to ensure everyone’s safety. Your cooperation during this time will be greatly appreciated.’’
