Minister Kyakulaga Urges Organic Farming in Iganga
Minister of State for Agriculture, Bwino Fred Kyakulaga, urged the people of Iganga to utilize organic fertilizers to address the challenge of soil fertility loss due to continuous usage without replenishment.
Kyakulaga emphasized the importance of servicing the land regularly to maintain its fertility, likening it to maintaining a vehicle.
He advocated for the use of organic fertilizers such as animal waste, particularly cow dung, as an affordable alternative to artificial fertilizers.
Addressing attendees at the belated International Women’s Day celebration for Iganga district at Buzaya Primary School, Kyakulaga, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Kigulu North constituency, stressed the need for sustainable agricultural practices.
During the event, Minister Kyakulaga, alongside the Woman Member of Parliament for Iganga, Kauma Sauda Alibaawo, donated Shs4m towards the construction of an office for Buzaya Primary School and a water harvesting tank. They pledged to leave a lasting impact on communities hosting Women’s Day celebrations.
Kyakulaga encouraged women to engage in income-generating activities and offered support for potato farming, highlighting its significance as a raw material for a bread factory being established in Kigulu North.
Alibaawo echoed Kyakulaga’s sentiments, urging women to report cases of domestic violence and emphasizing the importance of gender equality. She pledged to support women’s groups and empower them through income-generating activities.
The celebrations included various games, with Alibaawo donating prizes to participants.
Mudondo Madina, chairperson of Iganga Women’s Council, commended the district and their MPs for their support and requested additional support for women leaders.
She also appealed to the government to provide means of transport to facilitate women’s economic mobilization efforts and related activities.
