Ministers Rally for Climate Action Amidst Growing Environmental Concerns
State Minister for Fisheries, Hellen Adoa, has reached out to Minister of Disaster Preparedness, Lillian Aber, to passionately advocate for climate change mitigation and management among the people of Uganda.
Adoa’s appeal comes amidst a rise in human activities within the country’s fragile ecosystems, leading to an increase in disaster occurrences.
One of the ecosystems significantly impacted is Lake Victoria and its surrounding shores, prompting concern from the Minister.
“Currently, Lake Victoria is losing its former beauty due to the destruction of wetlands by people,” stated Adoa.
Adoa attributed the challenges of climate change to the ongoing destruction of wetlands, largely driven by population growth.
“Due to population growth, we are witnessing the destruction of wetlands. I urge my sister, if we are to prevent these disasters that damage infrastructure in mountainous regions like Kigezi and Bugisu, we must urge people to refrain from encroaching on wetlands,” Adoa emphasized.
This same plea has been extended to the fishing community, who predominantly inhabit the lake, its shores, river banks, and wetlands.
Adoa urges locals to cease the destruction of wetlands to ensure Uganda maintains a clean and healthy environment.
“I implore the people of Uganda to honor wetlands and lakes so that we do not overburden them. The cultivation of wetlands, lakes, and rivers results in soil erosion, ultimately leading to the degradation of our water bodies,” Adoa added.
These remarks were made during the thanksgiving ceremony for Lillian Aber, held in Kitgum District in the Acholi sub-region of Northern Uganda.
Aber, who serves as the Kitgum District Woman Member of Parliament and was recently appointed State Minister in Charge of Relief, Disaster Preparedness, and Refugees, expressed her commitment not to disappoint the appointing authority.
Minister Engineer Hilary Onek pledged to provide mentorship to Aber as she assumes her significant responsibilities in managing relief efforts, disaster occurrences, and refugee matters.
The event, graced by President Yoweri Museveni, showcased Aber’s dedication to her new role.
