Museveni Warns Permanent Secretaries as he Declares Fresh War on Corruption

President Yoweri Museveni wants assets of corrupt government officials confiscated, as part of new measures to fight graft in the country

While speaking at the International Anti-Corruption Day 2018 at Kololo Ceremonial grounds on Monday, Mr Museveni said that although there exists agencies to fight corruption new measures such as the anti-corruption unit under his office are designed to wipe out corruption.

“People had lost hope thinking that even when they report corruption cases nothing will be done to the culprits,” Mr Museveni said.

He added that he will talk to the Speaker of Parliament and the Chief Justice about drafting legislation on attaching property of the corrupt.

The President also emphasized that his office will now be hands on in the renewed fight against the corruption.

Earlier, Mr Museveni unveiled the State House Anti-Corruption Unit headed by Lt Col. Edith Nakalema and issued toll free lines for members of the public to report corruption cases to his office.

He however explained that the new unit will not usurp the powers of the already existing agencies that fight corruption.

“Nakalema will not takeover the IGG’s job, the IGG’s job is to investigate the corrupt but Nakalema is my eye and as far as corruption is concerned, once she gets the call we find out if the supervisors know and if not, why they didn’t know,” he said, adding, “This is how I will fire the sub county chiefs, police officers and we reduce on ‘Kawukumi’.

Meanwhile the President warned Permanent secretaries, Chief Administrative Officers, Sub county Chiefs and Town Clerks to perform their duties to ensure government money is not stolen, saying they can stop or encourage corruption.

“These have authority over money in Uganda. In this campaign if I get news of corruption I will go for those four,” he noted.
