Uganda’s women’s badminton team is set to make a remarkable debut at the 2024 Uber Cup in China. Scheduled from April 28th to May 5th in Chengdu, the tournament marks Uganda’s inaugural appearance in the prestigious event. The team, led by Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Badminton Association (UBA) Simon Mugabi, is determined to leave a lasting impression.
Mugabi expressed confidence in the team’s capabilities, emphasizing their recent strong showing at the African Games in Ghana. Despite narrowly missing out on qualification for the Paris Olympics, the team’s spirited performances in tournaments across Spain, France, and Slovenia have bolstered their resolve to compete against the world’s best.
Husinah Kobugabe, who clinched a silver medal in women’s singles at the African Games, affirmed the team’s ambition, stating they are not merely participating but aiming to challenge the elite players. Kobugabe highlighted their familiarity with top-tier competition, having faced formidable opponents in previous tournaments.
The squad, comprising Gladys Mbabazi, Fadilah Shamika, Tracy Naluwooza, alongside Kobugabe, is eager to showcase their talent on the global stage. Uganda’s participation in the Uber Cup signifies a significant milestone, underscoring the nation’s growing presence in international badminton.
With Uganda joining the ranks of Uber Cup contenders, anticipation is high for their performance as they gear up to face powerhouse teams from Japan, Indonesia, and Hong Kong, China in Group C. This historic moment reflects Uganda’s commitment to advancing its badminton prowess on the global circuit.
