Nkumba Traffic Lights Accident Claimed Life of Lawyer

Police have identified the victim of the fatal accident that occurred on Wednesday morning at Nkumba traffic lights in Entebbe, Wakiso District.

The accident happened when a fully loaded cement truck lost control while trying to veer off the road but instead landed on a white Mutshibishi car awaiting the traffic lights signal.

Police have now identified the deceased as Okoit Rapael, a 34-year-old lawyer from Maldes Advocates, residing in Seeta, Mukono District. The deceased was on his way to Entebbe court for a case in a new car he reportedly purchased four days when the fatal incident occurred.

He was also a husband to Her Worship Kwagala Faith Irene, a Magistrate Grade One, in Kyenjojo.

According to the traffic police, spokesman Michael Kananura, the accident involved three motor vehicles: a Sany truck bearing registration number UAN 836D belonging to Seyani Brothers Construction, a Mitsubishi RVR with registration number UBQ 371P, and a Toyota Hilux registered as UG 3100016.

Thee Sany truck, loaded with concrete and traveling from Kampala towards Entebbe along the Kampala-Entebbe road, lost control as it approached Nkumba traffic lights. The truck collided with parked vehicles, causing it to overturn and land on the Mitsubishi RVR, also damaging the Toyota Hilux.

Kananura identifies the other drivers involved as Dan Oketch, aged 37 and driving the Sany truck and Kikaire Ronald Ngobi, who was driving the Toyota Hilux. Oketcho is in police custody to aid in investigations.

The cause of the accident has been attributed to reckless driving as the driver of the cement truck failed to brake.

All vehicles have been towed to Entebbe Police Station pending inspection by the Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOV). Oketch, the driver of the Sany truck, is currently in custody at Entebbe Police Station.

The body of the deceased was transported to City Mortuary Mulago for autopsy.
