Learners at Little Muheji Nursery and Primary School, located Nansana West 1B Zone, narrowly escaped a devastating fire incident yesterday evening.
The fire believed to have been started by unidentified goons spread through the boys dormitory section, destructing property but leaving no fatalities or injuries. It took the timely response of police officers to avert what could have been a catastrophic situation.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Spokesperson says on the evening of April 16, 2024, police officers in Nansana received a a distress call reporting a fire outbreak at the primary seven boys’ dormitory, affectionately known as Tassels.
Fortunately, the school’s security detail, aided by police personnel, sprang into action promptly, swiftly dousing the flames. However, not before the inferno ravaged property within the dormitory, like mattresses, pillowcases, bed sheets, and essential scholastic materials.
Preliminary findings indicate that prior to the outbreak, an unidentified suspect tampered with the electric wire supplying power to the dormitory and the camera control room. This deliberate act of sabotage paved the way for the arson attempt, plunging the school into chaos.
Owoyesigyire commended one Didas Nuwamanya, for his keen observation and timely discovery of the fire and subsequent alert to the police guards played a pivotal role in thwarting the nefarious intentions of the perpetrator(s). Despite attempts to ignite the fire using matches, their efforts were largely unsuccessful, sparing the school from extensive damage.
He says no students suffered harm during the ordeal. However, suspicions linger regarding the possible involvement of individuals privy to the school’s layout and operations.
In police quest for answers, authorities have deployed canine units to the scene, yet initial efforts yielded inconclusive results. Heightened security measures, including increased personnel and surveillance, have been recommended for the school premises in light of this alarming incident. Interviews with staff members and neighboring institutions are poised to provide valuable insights into the perpetrators’ motives and identities.
Of notable significance is the revelation that the school had previously received threats via social media.
Police have urged anyone possessing pertinent information regarding this incident to step forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
