President Museveni Launches First Tin Refining Plant
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni inaugurated Uganda’s inaugural tin refining plant in Ruti, Mbarara City.
The facility, owned by Woodcross Resources, integrates a mining division focused on exploration and development in Uganda, a commercial-scale tin refinery in Mbarara, and a mineral trading division sourcing concentrate from audited mining sites in the Great Lakes Region of East Africa.
Tin, a soft, silvery-white metal found in certain mineral ores, is vital for various applications, including corrosion prevention coatings, solder production, electronics, and tin can manufacturing.
President Museveni, accompanied by his daughter Natasha Museveni Karugire, reiterated the importance of value addition to Uganda’s raw materials, emphasizing that exporting unprocessed minerals deprives the country of significant revenue and opportunities for socio-economic advancement.
He cautioned against leaders who exploit African resources, emphasizing the need for informed governance.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Development Ruth Nankabirwa praised Woodcross Resources for establishing the tin smelting plant, highlighting its role in adding value to Uganda’s minerals and creating employment opportunities.
Woodcross Resources’ Managing Director, Mr. Omid Ameri, expressed gratitude for fulfilling their commitment to President Museveni by establishing the tin refinery.
He underscored the global significance of Uganda’s entry into tin refining, positioning the country as a trusted producer in a market dominated by a few nations.
Moreover, the Mayor of Mbarara City, Mr. Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi, commended President Museveni for his dedication to enhancing Uganda’s raw materials.
