NEMA Halts Illegal Activities on Nakiyanja Wetland

The wetland degradation was allegedly perpetrated by local developers with fake certificates.

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has intervened to halt the degradation of the Nakiyanja wetland, aiming to safeguard the crucial ecosystem in Sonde, Kira municipality, Wakiso district.

Degradation of wetlands escalates the risk of flooding, loss of biodiversity, and destruction of habitats for various species.

In a press statement released on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, NEMA announced that a joint technical team comprising members from the Ministry of Water and Environment, NEMA, and the Environment Protection Police Unit successfully put a stop to the ongoing development.

According to the statement, the degradation was allegedly perpetrated by a local company  Genagri Limited, which had been deceiving inspectors by presenting a certificate of approval from NEMA.

“Our inspectors have determined that the degradation was allegedly caused by Genagri Limited, which misled inspectors by presenting a certificate of approval No. NEMA/EIA/15422 for the development of mixed residential and commercial structures on a small piece of dry land elsewhere. However, the developer illegally encroached upon the nearby Nakiyanja wetland,” the statement revealed.

Authorities emphasized that further investigation into the matter is underway and will lead to a restoration order, as well as potential prosecution or imposition of administrative fines.

Furthermore, NEMA urged Ugandans to remain vigilant in their efforts to promote a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment.

The Nakiyanja wetland is a vital component of the ecosystem, as it drains into the Sezibwa River, serving the greater Kayunga and Mukono districts.

On September 2, 2021, NEMA suspended the approval and issuance of permits for wetland activities indefinitely and vows to continue taking decisive action to address all environmental violations nationwide.
