Residents of Busakira C village in Kityerera sub-county, Mayuge district, are still reeling in shock following the unexpected collapse and subsequent death of Betty Nabirye, a 52-year-old member of their community.

The deceased died during a village savings group meeting where 20 members had gathered at Nabirye’s home for their weekly meeting where they contributed 2,000 Shillings each as part of their savings routine.

However, during the discussions on improving their enterprises, Nabirye suddenly fell off her chair and onto the ground. Initially, her colleagues thought it was a minor incident and attempted to help her up, only to discover that she had passed away.

Some Sacco members claim the deceased looked very fine and healthy moments before she dropped dead. Some allege that she was bewitched by unknown people to death. The local leaders called police after noticing people cocooning in crowds and speculating her demise while getting rowdy, to prevent any potential mob justice spurred by superstitious beliefs, they acted promptly.

Diana Nandawula, the police spokesperson for Busoga East Region, confirmed the incident and stated that the deceased’s body had been transferred to Mayuge Health Center IV for postmortem examination. Additionally, detectives have visited the scene and are gathering statements from eyewitnesses to address any unfounded rumors circulating about the incident.
