Ngora District Secondary Teachers Protest Over Prolonged Salary Delays

Secondary teachers in Ngora District staged a protest over delayed salary payments, asserting that many of them have not received payment since September 2023, while the majority of head teachers have been paid.

The protest unfolded in the town centre of Ngora District on April 4, 2024.

The teachers lament that despite numerous meetings with district authorities, no payments have materialized despite assurances given.

“Several of us haven’t seen a paycheck for an entire year, with others missing payments since November 2023. We’ve engaged in several meetings with authorities, yet our pleas remain unanswered,” expressed an anonymous teacher.

According to local district authorities, several meetings were convened with the teachers, but the District Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) has been absent from all, leaving them devoid of clear information to relay to the teachers.

They disclosed that during the protest, they visited the CAO’s office only to be met by the assistant, who claimed that payments had been disbursed to the teachers’ accounts.

“Amid today’s protest, the assistant CAO at the office of the CAO informed the teachers that payments have been made and urged them to exercise patience as they await confirmation messages on their phones,” relayed local authorities.

Ngora District, as per local authorities, houses five government-aided secondary schools, yet almost all teachers in these institutions have gone without salary payments for over six months.
