Forty-eight soldiers and one officer have successfully completed a four-month Marine Basic Induction Course at the Ntokolo Maritime Sustainance Base in Mayuge district.
The course that was initially designed for six months, was shortened to allow for approximately three annual sessions, aiming to train an average of 147 students yearly.
The curriculum covered a wide range of subjects, including search and rescue techniques, international maritime law, operations, small boat handling, political science, and first aid. Lt.
Emmanuel Muchunguzi, UPDF Marine spokesperson, noted that training more marine soldiers is vital to protect Uganda’s water bodies, many of which are shared with neighboring countries.
However, he acknowledged challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, including dormitories, classrooms, and administrative blocks, hindering smooth operations for both instructors and trainees.
Elijah Madoi, Mayuge Resident District Commissioner, highlighted the positive transformation of the Ntokolo Marine area following its official revamp by President Yoweri Museveni.
“Ntokolo is gradually regaining its former glory, with decent business setups replacing ramshackle drug dealing hideouts,” Madoi remarked.
He further revealed the importance of continued support from the UPDF leadership to address infrastructure challenges and ensure the efficient functioning of the Ntokolo Maritime Sustainance Base.
