President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has commended religious leaders for condemning corruption in their preaching, stating, “I was very pleased to hear the religious leaders’ strong stance against corruption. Keep it up. The corrupt individuals are like parasites that hinder and undermine our efforts for transformation,” he said.

President Museveni made these remarks on Sunday in his Easter Message to Ugandans.

However, he also reminded religious leaders that the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has been aware of this issue from the outset.

He recounted his involvement in combating corruption in various forms since the 1960s, including the corruption of chiefs, teachers engaging in misconduct, and theft of government resources by medical staff and veterinarians.

Explaining the rationale behind empowering local communities, President Museveni highlighted the importance of involving the people affected by corruption in governance. He emphasized the need for accountability among elected officials and urged voters to hold them responsible for their actions.

President Museveni assured Ugandans that mechanisms to combat corruption exist at the local level and encouraged their utilization.

He emphasized the role of Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) in monitoring government officials’ conduct and pledged to take action against those found engaging in corrupt practices.

Addressing the issue of land grabbing, President Museveni underscored the importance of utilizing existing administrative, political, security, and religious structures to address the problem effectively.

Furthermore, he called on religious leaders to mobilize believers to participate in wealth creation programs, emphasizing the NRM’s commitment to poverty alleviation through initiatives such as home income generation and education for all.

President Museveni expressed satisfaction with religious leaders’ emphasis on the two greatest Christian commandments: loving God and loving one’s neighbor.

He commended their efforts to promote unity and discourage sectarianism.
