SPA Mutyabule Urges Religious Leaders to Join in Poverty Fight
Senior Presidential Advisor on Poverty Alleviation for Busoga, Florence Mutyabule, has urged the leaders of different religious denominations in the region to utilize their pulpits to intensify efforts in sensitizing their followers towards the elimination of poverty.
In her congratulatory message to the Christian community during this year’s Easter, falling on March 31st, 2024, Mutyabule cautioned against extravagance and reckless celebrations that often drain family finances.
Mutyabule, who served as President of the Mothers’ Union in Busoga Diocese for two decades, highlighted poverty as a significant challenge facing Christians and Ugandans in general, attributed to various factors including poor enterprise choices.
“Many of our people are struggling to grow sugarcane in just an acre of land, while others have leased out family land to wealthy farmers for meager returns,” she observed.
She also appealed to church leaders to provide guidance on accurate biblical interpretations, rather than leaving believers to interpret scriptures on their own, citing instances where biblical texts are quoted literally and out of context.
The former Namutumba District Woman MP cited one of the Beatitudes from Jesus’ Sermon On the Mount, emphasizing the importance of proper contextual understanding of scripture.
She expressed concern that some religious leaders have succumbed to literalism, leading to misleading interpretations and encouraging followers to rely solely on prayer without engaging in income-generating activities.
While acknowledging the power of prayer, Florence Mutyabule stressed the importance of hard work, citing biblical teachings that endorse diligence and the utilization of natural resources for sustenance and prosperity.
She urged clerics, whose numbers are increasing rapidly due to the proliferation of churches, to mobilize youth, women, and persons with disabilities within their congregations to serve as agents of change.
Quoting from Paul’s Second Letter to the Thessalonians, Mutyabule emphasized the biblical endorsement of hard work and responsible resource utilization for the benefit of present and future generations.
