President Museveni Pays Tribute to Late Speaker Oulanya
President Museveni paid tribute to the late Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah, former Speaker of Parliament, for his dedication and commitment to public service.
The President made these remarks on Thursday, March 28, 2024, during the Elders Mentorship and Leadership Awards luncheon 2024, held at State House Entebbe.
The ceremony was organized by the Office of the Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Duties, headed by Odrek Rwabwogo, who also chairs the Presidential Advisory Committee on Exports and Industrial Development (PACEID).
Under the theme “Modelling the Right Behaviour for the Youth of Africa in the 21st Century,” the President disclosed that the late Oulanyah was a commendable cadre who embraced the message of the NRM government, enabling him to rise as a top leader in the country before his passing. “He started from UPC, but when he listened to the NRM’s message, he honestly acknowledged their correctness.
He intellectually engaged with our ideas and eventually joined the NRM, rising prominently within the party to become the Speaker, the third-highest position in the country after the President and Vice President,” President Museveni stated.
Furthermore, President Museveni emphasized that Oulanyah’s achievements were fueled by a clear vision. He urged others to follow suit, stating, “If you all follow what we have been saying, the country will progress rapidly because we have everything here, but the main problem has been knowing what should be done and why.” He emphasized the importance of adhering to the NRM’s principles, including the commercialization of agriculture, industrialization, artisanship, services, and ICT.
The Elders Mentorship and Leadership Awards aim to recognize individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service and leadership in their respective fields. At least 16 elders were honored for their significant contributions to the country’s development.
President Museveni also expressed gratitude towards Rwabwogo for organizing the event, underscoring the importance of acknowledging and appreciating those who contribute to societal development. “I want to salute Mr. Odrek Rwabwogo and his group for initiating and following through with this event. If we fail to recognize and appreciate those who excel, we risk discouraging others from striving for excellence,” he remarked.
Nathan Okori, the late Oulanyah’s father, expressed gratitude to the government for honoring his son, stating, “I’m truly grateful that my late son is still remembered.”
