One Dead, Two Missing as Boat Capsizes in Lake Bunyonyi
A boat carrying five passengers capsized in Lake Bunyonyi, Kabale District, claiming at least one life and leaving two others missing.
The tragedy occurred on Saturday evening just hours after a heavy storm battered the area, with rains persisting for over five hours.
Reports indicate that the boat, a canoe, was transporting five passengers, including two adult females and a baby, on the deep waters of the lake when it succumbed to the heavy waves and strong winds generated by the storm, ultimately leading to its sinking. Local sources suggest that the vessel struggled to withstand the adverse weather conditions, resulting in the fatal accident.
Local authorities state that only two people managed to escape the disaster, leaving the baby and two others unaccounted for. Despite the timely response of marine police to the scene, all victims had dispersed across the waters, hampering rescue efforts.
Elly Maate, the Police spokesperson for Kigezi Region, confirmed that the lifeless body of a five-month-old infant named Grant was retrieved by marine police and laid to rest on Sunday. However, two other victims, identified as Naturinda Racheal and Kesande Lehonelia, remain missing.
Efforts are currently ongoing to locate and recover the bodies of the missing individuals, with authorities and community members working tirelessly to bring closure to the tragic incident.
