President Museveni Advocates for Smaller Families, Development in Lwengo
President Yoweri Museveni has urged residents of Lwengo to embrace smaller family sizes and adopt healthier lifestyles.
Speaking at a fundraising ceremony at Mbirizi Muslim playground, President Museveni emphasized the economic consequences of large families, stressing the need for sustainable population growth to foster development in the area. He highlighted the importance of making informed choices to prolong life expectancy and enhance the overall well-being of the community, underscoring the correlation between family size and economic prosperity.
“Previously, people used to give birth to numerous children out of fear that some might not survive due to lack of vaccines and essential drugs. However, with the availability of these medical resources, such fears should dissipate. Having fewer children whom you can effectively care for becomes feasible,” Museveni explained.
Additionally, the president laid the foundation stone for the construction of the Lwengo Muslim district headquarters and a health center IV in Lwengo town council, reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and healthcare services in the district.
However, challenges persist, as highlighted by Lwengo District chairman Ibrahim Kitatta. He lamented the prevalence of corruption, bribery, and embezzlement among local leaders, citing these issues as major impediments to development. Kitatta echoed the sentiments of many residents, calling for increased government intervention to address systemic issues hindering progress in Lwengo.
“President, the funds allocated for service delivery in Lwengo, particularly for road maintenance, did not reach the district,” Kitatta revealed. He also raised concerns about the education sector, noting that public schools in Lwengo were disregarding presidential directives by unlawfully deducting money from parents, thus limiting educational opportunities for children in the district.
