The Directorate of Traffics and Road Safety has revealed that 77 people died and 399 others were injured in road crashes last week.
According to Michael Kananura, the spokesperson for Traffic and Road Safety, most of the people who died were motorcyclists, pedestrians, and passengers on motorcycles. 34% were motorcyclists, 30% were pedestrians, and 9% were passengers on motorcycles.
He blamed these accidents on dangerous driving behaviors like overtaking carelessly and driving too fast. He says police will move to curb some of these vices and restore sanity on the roads
Kananura says this week, the police will take action to stop these dangerous behaviors. They will target drivers who are speeding, motorcyclists who aren’t wearing helmets or reflective jackets, and drivers who don’t follow the rules at pedestrian crossings.
Kananura said that pedestrians, especially near crowded places and schools, are often hurt because drivers don’t slow down. He reminded drivers to be extra cautious around children, elderly people, and those with disabilities.
“Be extra careful when children are around and when driving near schools. Be friendly to old people and disabled persons when they are having difficulty crossing the road. Always slow down near schools and hospitals. You must stop at zebra crossing to let pedestrians cross using the zebra crossing. You must not over take on or near zebra crossing, because this may make it difficult for you to see the pedestrians who has started crossing the road using the Zebra crossing, ” Kananura cautioned
Kananura also encouraged the public to report any traffic violations or concerns by calling the toll-free number 0800199099 or using social media.
