Soldier Surrenders to Police After Shooting Dead Bar Bouncer

Police are investigating circumstances under which a security guard, identified only as Balaam, lost his life in a shooting incident at Serene Woods Bar in Bulindo, Kira Division, Wakiso District.

The deceased was reportedly gunned down by a Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF)soldier affiliated with the 1st Infantry Division in Kakiri, identified as Corporal Colbert Jawiambe.

Eyewitnesses claim that the duo was involved in a deep heated exchange at the bar where the deceased Balaam was working as a bouncer.

According to Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, the incident happened on March 2, 2024, at approximately 4:00 am, when Jawiambe a guard on duty at a nearby construction site had a disagreement with one of the waiters over a balance of 6000 shillings. It is alleged that the suspect bought liquor from the bar but didn’t agree with the balance being handed to him.

Onyango says the deceased stormed out of the bar in anger , only to return moments later armed with an SMG rifle loaded with live ammunition, he was denied entry by Balaam, causing him to fire fatal live bullets.

After shooting Balaam, Jawiambe fled the scene with his gun, while Balaam was rushed to Najeera Hospital for initial treatment and later transferred to Mulago Hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

Onyango states that Jawiambe later surrendered himself to the Police, along with the firearm containing live ammunition, and was subsequently rearrested and transferred to Kira Police Station for further investigation.
