Former Tanzania President Ali Hassan Mwinyi Passes Away at 98
Ali Hassan Mwinyi, a former schoolteacher turned politician, who served as Tanzania’s second post-independence president, passed away on Thursday in Dar es Salaam, the country’s former capital. He was 98 years old.
The announcement of his death was made by Tanzania’s current president, Samia Suluhu Hassan, on X, former Twitter.
She mentioned that Mr. Mwinyi had been undergoing treatment for lung cancer.
At the age of 60, Mr. Mwinyi assumed the presidency in 1985, succeeding Julius K. Nyerere, who had voluntarily stepped down after leading the country since its inception as Tanganyika in 1961, and its subsequent union with Zanzibar in 1964 to form Tanzania.
