Museveni Urges NRM Leaders: Prioritize Party Loyalty in Register Update
President Museveni has urged NRM party leaders not to be swayed into recruiting and registering uncertain individuals who frequently switch parties.
Speaking on Wednesday during the launch of the register exercise aimed at updating the NRM register for the 2026 elections, Museveni stated that only those with a credible history of supporting NRM, backed by community witnesses, should be considered for registration to avoid confusion in the future.
He warned of alleged plans by the opposition to disrupt NRM primaries and emphasized the need to prioritize safeguarding the party and its core members.
“Now I hear there are plans by the opposition to swam, invade and distort our primaries. We should, therefore, not be in a hurry to register people who are crossing; we should only register those people who have had a credible trail of supporting NRM and are backed by the villagers/ witnesses. Leave out those not ours, let’s safeguard our party and its core members.” said Museveni
Museveni underscored the responsibility of party leaders to mobilize support for the NRM, stating the necessity for them to deeply understand the party’s principles.
Museveni likened NRM leaders to priests, urging them to delve into the depth of NRM principles to effectively mobilize and sensitize the public.
“Mobilization in form of holding meetings and rallies is good but all those efforts will be very easy if you go back to the NRM principles and understand them. These principles are a diagnosis of the problems of Uganda and then a prescription. Therefore, as you mobilise, understand these principles yourself,” Museveni said.
The electoral roadmap outlined by Dr. Tanga Odoi, the NRM electoral commission chairperson, includes activities such as updating the register at the village level, holding barazas for approval, and verification of members. Campaigns and polling for party structures at various levels will follow in March and April.
Between March 19 and 24, the party will initiate the process of calling for expressions of interest and nominating candidates for party structures at the village and cell levels. Following this, between March 25 and 26, campaigns will be orchestrated in every village.
Subsequently, on March 27, the party is scheduled to conduct polling and announce the results of party structures at the village level. Moving forward, on April 5, the compilation of the register will commence at the parish level, followed by the compilation of the voters register and polling of party structures on April 12 at the sub-county and town council levels.
The electoral exercise will progress to the municipal and city division level on April 16, and then to the district and city levels on April 19. Finally, between April 20 and 30, the compilation of the register will be completed, and the final results will be transmitted to the party secretariat.
The roadmap for selecting NRM candidates for presidential, parliamentary, and local government positions will be disclosed at a later date.
