Stephen Tibihikira has been detained by Kagadi police following his alleged involvement in a fatal car accident during Monday’s protest at Iguruka.
The incident, which happened amidst a demonstration regarding road conditions, saw Tibihikira, a driver for Kagadi local government, reportedly driving at high speed and colliding with Magezi Tumuhaise, 25.
Tumuhaise was a resident of Rwenzori Cell, Kayanja Parish, Mayirirwe Subcounty, Kagadi District.
The protest arose from dissatisfaction with the poor state of the Muhorro-Ndaiga road by locals of Muhoro, Bwikara, and surrounding areas in Kagadi district.
Albertine regional police spokesperson, Julius Hakiza, confirmed Tibihikira’s arrest for the incident.
During the protest in Muhorro township, a district health department’s double cabin, carrying LC5 chairperson Yosia Ndibwami, reportedly ran over a protester before speeding away. The incident, captured on video and circulated widely on social media, has prompted calls for the arrest of those involved.
Tumuhaise died instantly, and his body was taken to the mortuary, as confirmed by the Albertine region police spokesperson.
Hakiza emphasized the importance of seeking intervention from authorities for resolving issues rather than resorting to protests.
