Makerere University Prepares for Third Virtual Guild Elections

Sixteen candidates, including two women, have been approved to run for the third virtual Makerere Guild elections. This decision was made by the university’s 90th Electoral Commission on February 23, and the elections are scheduled for March 7, 2024.

These candidates were selected from a pool of 22 people who wanted to run for the guild presidential elections.

More than 400 students are seeking Guild Representative Councils (GRCs) in various schools and residence halls.

It is anticipated that over 30,000 students will participate in the online elections to choose new guild leadership, as the previous term ended on February 8, 2024.

Among the candidates are Jonathan Basakirwa, Muhammadi Mukwaya, Ibrahim SSendagi, Victoria Mayiga, Elizabathe Shakira Wacha, Hamis Kabaale, Vincent Lubega Nsamba, Edmond Ariho, Andrew Efiti, and George Ssemanda. Others include Simon Wandukwa, Mudathiru Ssemanda, Fulugensio Kasekende, Joshua Ssemuyaba Vitali, and Allan Micah Ikemeri.

Ramadhan Kirunda, the chairperson of the electoral body, cautioned the candidates to adhere to the rules set by the Makerere Electoral Commission (EC) and the university. These rules include limits on the number of supporters candidates can have, staying away from national politics, and conducting all campaign activities online.

The university decided to hold virtual elections after facing challenges during the 88th guild campaigns in July 2022. They hope that using new technology will make the voting process smoother and safer for students.
