The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) disclosed that an outstanding 95.9% of candidates who sat for the 2023 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examination achieved grades enabling them to progress to the post- UCE level.
During the results announcement at State House Nakasero on Thursday, UNEB Executive Director Mr. Dan Odongo highlighted that the candidate turnout saw a significant increase of 13,008, rising from 349,459 in 2022 to 364,469 in 2023.
Odongo noted that a remarkable 64,782 candidates, representing 17.9% of the total, attained the highest grade division compared to the previous year’s 13.5%. The overall failure rate also reduced by 0.5%, indicating that 95.9% of candidates are eligible to advance to the post-UCE level.
Furthermore, Odongo highlighted that 32.5% of candidates, totaling 118,633, were beneficiaries of the government’s Universal Secondary Education program, with a notable 183,998 being female candidates.
In addition, 809 special needs education candidates, comprising 368 males and 441 females, participated in the 2023 examinations, showing a slight increase from the previous year.
Odongo emphasized improvements in English language, religious education, mathematics, and biology performance while acknowledging slight declines in history, agriculture, and physics. Nonetheless, he mentioned that other subject performances remained consistent with previous years.
