Police Officer on the Run for Raping Female Suspect in Custody

Police in Jinja are searching for a constable accused of raping a female suspect in custody.

The constable, Salim Mugoya, allegedly assaulted the 20-year-old woman detained at Namaganga police post.

James Mubi, the Kira Regional Police Spokesperson says the victim, who was at the time faced marital issues, fled her home and sought refuge at her grandmother’s home in Busedde sub-county, Jinja district, abandoning her two year old child.

Mubi says her husband reported her for child desertion on February 4th, 2024, leading to her arrest by Mugoya. She was held in the police cell for two nights between February 08 and 09 until her husband and the couple’s family members came to resolve the matter amicably.

Upon her release on police bond, the victim claimed that Mugoya had raped her repeatedly during her two-night detention. She stated she resisted, but Mugoya locked her in the women’s cells to assault her further.

Mubi said a case was filed at Kakira police station and officers there took her to Busedde Health Center IV for a medical examination, that confirmed forced penetration.

He says Mugoya has since fled into hiding and police are currently searching for him.
