UPDF Highlights Need for Tribal Unity in Karamoja
During the 43rd Tarehe Sita anniversary celebration in Moroto municipality, the UPDF’s 3rd Infantry Division urged leaders in the Karamoja sub-region to prioritize peace and unity for the social and economic advancement of the area.
Brig Gen Felix Busizoori emphasized the detrimental effects of disunity among the Karamojong clusters on the region’s security despite government interventions. He called for an end to tribalism and the promotion of projects aimed at transforming the lives of the Karamojong people.
Busizoori also urged leaders to facilitate the disarmament exercise to achieve social-economic transformation.
He noted challenges with some local leaders’ reluctance to mobilize communities for peace and disarmament, emphasizing the need for unified messaging against violence and illegal firearms.
Additionally, he revealed the role of alcohol, particularly waragi, in fueling conflict and urged collective action to address this issue.
Moroto Municipality Mayor Ismail Mohammed praised the collaboration between security forces and civilians in maintaining peace, leading to a thriving night economy and improved safety for residents. He pledged continued cooperation with security forces to ensure a conducive environment for civilians.
As part of Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) activities, the UPDF conducted medical camps in Nakapiripirit and Kotido districts, providing vital healthcare services to hundreds of patients.
