Kharunda Ruth Precious, a pupil from Nakasero Primary School, took a bold step on Monday  morning by walking up to the gate of Parliament, seeking to meet with the Speaker, Rt Hon Anita Among.

The Speaker, impressed by the young girl’s determination, shared the encounter on her official platform.

Kharunda, facing financial constraints and navigating challenges to pursue her education, fearlessly approached the security officers at Parliament’s gate. She expressed her desire to meet Speaker Among, saying her family was suffering financial hardships.

“She was candid about her desire to stay in school despite the financial hardships her parents face in taking care of her five siblings. Girls like Ruth deserve all the support they need and it is incumbent upon us to ensure they stay in school.” Speaker Among wrote on her X platform

The Speaker said she later received the pupil in her office where she recognized the importance of supporting students like Kharunda in their educational journey. She called for collective responsibility in ensuring that ‘the girl child’ stays in school and pursue their dreams.

Among further stated that she got in touch with the pupil’s parents, identified her residence, and made a humble contribution to facilitate her continued education.

“Girls like Ruth deserve all the support they need, and it is incumbent upon us to ensure they stay in school. I got in touch with her parents, established where she lives, and have made my humble contribution to ensure she stays in school and pursues her dreams,” Speaker Among announced on her platform.
