UPC Distances Itself from New Opposition Pressure Group United Forces of Change

Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has distanced itself from the ongoing opposition pressure group, United Force for Change, whose aim is to oust the National Resistance Movement (NRM) from power in the 2026 General Elections. UPC asserts that no single opposition political party or pressure group has approached them with an alliance agenda.

Muzeyi Faizo, UPC’s Head of Media and Communications, addressed journalists at Uganda House in Kampala on Wednesday, emphasizing that the party has well-established political structures and organs to handle party-related issues. He stated that UPC does not operate in isolation and does not engage in rumormongering. Faizo clarified that if individuals are claiming to represent UPC’s interests, the party does not recognize or acknowledge them.

Responding to questions about UPC’s flag being among those of opposition parties endorsing an alliance agenda, Mr. Faizo explained, “If there are people out there masquerading as representing the interests of the UPC political party, then take it from me that UPC does not recognize and know them.”

In relation to the ongoing 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and G77+China Summit in Kampala, UPC issued a statement highlighting the challenge of a heavy debt burden that has affected NAM members since the Arab-Israel war of the early 1970s. This debt burden has, according to UPC, diminished the capacity to invest in economies, trade, and opportunities for the youthful population.

The statement from UPC calls upon the NAM Summit to devise practical solutions to the debt trap. It outlines additional challenges, including food insecurity, climate change, poor health, unemployment, migration, and terrorism, urging NAM to focus and act decisively to restore hope for a better future.

UPC advocates for addressing these challenges by implementing substantial investments in innovation and technology to boost large-scale production, as well as a heavy reliance on local raw materials. The statement concludes by urging NAM members who have achieved development breakthroughs to serve as models, aligning with the summit’s theme of “deepening cooperation for shared global affluence.”
