Parliament Demands Extra Funding for Regional Stadiums Construction

Legislators on the Budget Committee demanded an extra Shs100 billion for the National Council of Sports to construct Akii-Bua Stadium in Lira and Buhinga Stadium in Kabarole, as revealed in the report by the Committee on Education and Sports on the Budget Framework Paper for the sector ministry.

The Chairperson, Hon. John Ntamuhiira, emphasized the need for government funding after a failed attempt to secure a grant from China.

Hon. Paul Omara expressed concern about the lack of priority for the proposed Akii-Bua Stadium in the budget, insisting it should be explicitly designated for AFCON 2027.

Hon. Maxwell Akora raised issues about the cost disparity between the 15,000-seater Hoima Stadium (Shs380 billion) and the 30,000-seater Akii-Bua Stadium (Shs180 billion), pointing out perceived regional bias.

The Education Committee recommended a Shs110 billion provision for constructing 11 training grounds for the 2027 AFCON games.

Additionally, Hon. Ntamuhiira proposed Shs114 billion more to cover commitment fees for the PAMOJA bid, ensuring Uganda meets Confederation of African Football (CAF) requirements to avoid bid revocation.
