FDC Questions Traffic Disruptions and Business Impact Amid NAM Summit
The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has expressed worry over traffic disruptions caused by police on certain Kampala roads during the ongoing 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit at Speke Resort Munyonyo.
FDC spokesperson John Kikonyogo criticized the government for not adequately informing the public about the traffic changes, leading to increased fares as motorists are forced to take longer routes.
Speaking at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi on January 15, Kikonyogo emphasized that the government had ample time to prepare for the NAM conference and should have communicated traffic diversions promptly to minimize inconvenience. The traffic adjustments have notably affected routes connecting to Entebbe and Munyonyo.
While the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety issued guidelines restricting motorcycles on specific routes leading to Speke Resort Munyonyo, Michael Kananura, the spokesperson for the Directorate, clarified that traffic diversions were necessary for the safety of summit delegates.
Additionally, the FDC raised concerns about the closure of small businesses along major routes, suggesting that local enterprises should have been allowed to sell their products to summit visitors.
Kikonyogo urged the government to promote the stocking of items by Ugandans that could be sold to summit attendees, thereby supporting local businesses.
