Public Urged to Replace Lost IDs as Govt Plans Mass Renewal with Enhanced Features

Following the expiration of a substantial number of citizens’ identification cards from this year to the next, the government disclosed a concerning discovery. Several Ugandans have lost their national IDs without attempting to replace them, while others are using their IDs as collateral for loans. These individuals currently lack possession of their IDs.

During a Monday press conference, Osbone Mushabe, the spokesperson for the registration authority, indicated that a proposal under consideration suggests people should submit their old national IDs to obtain new ones with enhanced features.

Mushabe emphasized the significance of having a national ID, stating that it is risky for citizens to be without one, especially as it is crucial for accessing key government and banking services. He urged those who lost their IDs to promptly replace them to avoid challenges during the impending mass renewal exercise.

If this proposal is approved, every citizen will need to present their previously acquired identification cards.

Simultaneously, the government reiterated its warning to individuals using their national IDs as collateral for loans, citing the illegality of such actions under Section 69 of the Registration of Persons Act. The spokesperson emphasized that national IDs remain the property of the government, regardless of personal details.

The government advised those who lost their IDs to report to the police and follow the proper renewal procedure, as the renewal period will conclude once the mass enrolment begins.
