Government Ministers Contribute Official Vehicles for NAM and G77 + China Summits
As the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and G77 + China summits approach next week, numerous ministers have generously provided their official vehicles to accommodate arriving delegates. A total of 800 vehicles are needed to provide transportation for delegates.
State Minister for Transport, Fred Byamukama, says 600 vehicles have already been handed over and remain packed at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds for inspection. These vehicles, parked for three weeks, will be returned to their respective institutions after the conclusion of the summits.
The Ministry started collecting these vehicles for the non-entitled officers between December 11 to 18.
Ministers from the Ministry of Works, Justice and Constitutional Affairs, and those at the Office of the Prime Minister have already submitted their vehicles. The collection includes ambulances, pick-up trucks, and buses, all parked at Kololo for three weeks.
Among the contributions are 170 brand-new sports utility vehicles,140 donated by the Chinese government and 30 procured by the Ugandan government.
Byamukama, expresses optimism about reaching the target of 800 vehicles, stating,
“We budgeted for 800, but so far we are at six hundred something, and we have not gone to NGOs. They are purely government vehicles. The purpose of assembling them early is to ensure we have the numbers we need.” he said
To maintain the functionality of these vehicles during the extended parking period, officials have implemented measures. They fire them up every 2-3 days and a team is on standby to ensure they start up these vehicles.
With the arrival of presidents’ delegates and advance teams this weekend, traffic is expected to increase significantly on Entebbe and Kampala roads.
