Police Heighten New Year Fireworks Oversight
Police have instructed commanders nationwide to monitor venues displaying New Year fireworks without proper clearance.
Additionally, they are mandated to enforce guidelines for venues authorized to showcase fireworks, ensuring strict adherence.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga stated, “Territorial commanders are assigned to identify organizers violating permitted fireworks times, which poses a danger to the public. They are further directed to oversee events, establish task teams, and prevent disruptions caused by unauthorized fireworks.”
According to the police, commanders should supervise and guide fireworks operators in the setup, discharge, and post-discharge phases to confirm the safety of the launch area.
“At their discretion, commanders have the authority to suspend or terminate displays due to unsafe conditions. Fireworks contractors must conduct onsite safety assessments and provide 10 properly tagged and functional fire extinguishers,” added Enanga.
He continued, “Fireworks operators must supply tools, equipment, safety storage, and qualified personnel for setup, firing, and thorough clearing of the area after the event.”
Guidelines specify that operators at the display site must ignite fireworks displays, prohibiting remote ignition systems not under direct control. Aerial displays should not include devices or shells less than three inches in diameter.
“No spectators or parking areas shall be located at the display site. Structures and premises within the site must remain unoccupied. A moderate number of trees and shrubs are acceptable if they do not hinder the location of unexploded shells or pose a fire safety threat.”
Operators are advised to keep fireworks materials dry, away from bad weather, and prohibit smoking, matches, or open flames within 50 feet. They must also restrict access to individuals under the influence of substances affecting judgment or stability.
“No cell phones or radio frequency devices are allowed in the discharge area. Wear protective equipment during setup duties. Verify that mortars and racks are made of approved materials, ensuring sufficient strength and durability for safe shell propulsion.”
