UPDF Launches Recruitment Drive to Counter ADF Attacks in Rwenzori Region
The Uganda People’s Defence Force has initiated the recruitment of Local Defence Unit (LDU) personnel in the Rwenzori sub-region to counter recurring attacks by suspected ADF rebels.
Tragically, 13 individuals lost their lives in the Kamwenge district last week due to ADF rebel attacks.
The recruitment drive has commenced in the districts of Kamwenge, Kitagwenda, and Bunyangabu.
According to UPDF spokesperson Brigadier Felix Kulayigye, the recruitment was ordered by the Commander-in-Chief, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Brigadier Kulayigye explained that the process would unfold in two phases, covering districts around Kibale Forest National Park, including Kitagwenda, Kyenjojo, and Kasese.
The first phase of recruitment, starting this week on December 27 and extending to January 10, will focus on Kamwenge and Kitagwenda districts. The goal is to mobilize efforts and cover 60 parishes, with each expected to contribute 12 recruits, totaling 720 LDUs.
James Birungi, overseeing the recruitment exercise in Kamwenge and Bunyangabu, reported that 530 out of the targeted 600 recruits have already been identified in Kamwenge District
