Festive Crime Report: Security Forces Confirm Over 80 Deaths in Three Days
The Uganda Police has revealed that at least 84 people were reported dead between December 24 and December 26, 2023.
The deaths have been attributed to suicide, accidents, acts of domestic violence, assault, mob justice, drowning among others.
Fred Enanga , the police spokesperson says thirty-eight people succumbed to assault, eight committed suicide, a similar number were killed using blunt objects, and another eight were stabbed to death, eight people drowned, one mob justice, three burned to death.
Enanga says notable among the deaths was eight people who died by drowning in areas of Busia, and Jinja City and one 75 year old Adrine Ngwabize Kamahanga, and her two grandchildren were killed when suspected ADF rebels attacked Nyabitusi village I in Kamwenge District on Christmas.
“Two people were shot dead, three were burnt to death by suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in Kamwenge,” Enanga said.
Three children, belonging to the same family, drowned at the Wagagai gold mine in Amagaro village, Buteba subcounty in Busia district on Christmas day. The siblings decided to take a plunge into the water, leaving one sibling on the sidelines.
Meanwhile, in Jinja , parents to two children that drowned at the shores of Masese Landing site have been arrested and charged with negligence. The deceased including Ebere Fazali, 12 and Haksim Wambedde 10 died while swimming.
In North Kyoga Region, two separate road crashes were reported in which four lives were lost, and a murder. Five people including a woman and four children perished in a nasty accident in Kapchorwa district black spot in Towei village, close to Sipi falls. Police have since recovered the wreckage of the vehicle that rolled downhill at the Towei blackspot.
He also stated that security forces have so far arrested 64 suspects currently being detained at various police stations.
