Archbishop Ssemogerere Calls for Action Against Exploitation of Disabled Children in Kampala.

The Archbishop of Kampala, His Grace Paul Ssemogerere, urged the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to take action in removing children with disabilities used as beggars on the streets of Kampala.

His remarks were made on December 20, 2023, during a Christmas party organized by KCCA for children with disabilities in Kampala. Archbishop Ssemogerere stressed the importance of compassion and practical steps to end the exploitation of these children.

“We must be compassionate and cease using children for our own interests. We must combat this abuse. It’s time to act, speaking less and doing more. Jesus didn’t speak much but took substantial action,” said Archbishop Ssemogerere.

He expressed gratitude to the parents of children with disabilities and commended KCCA for effective fund utilization. “I will join you in advocating to the government for increased funding,” he added.

The Archbishop called on all city dwellers to use the Christmas season for positive change, stating, “We need a neat and clean city. Let this Christmas inspire us to be clean, both externally and internally, for the good of our country.”

In his address, Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago reiterated the city’s commitment to inclusivity. He highlighted the shortage of schools for special needs children and ongoing efforts to formulate the “Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disability” ordinance. Lukwago also brought attention to land issues involving faith-founded schools, emphasizing the need for resolutions with the founding bodies of these institutions.

Dorothy Kisaka, the Executive Director, reassured the public that KCCA is dedicated to serving all citizens. She pledged ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure and the overall environment, stating, “The roads may be old, but we are doing our best to improve them. We will do whatever it takes not to disappoint you.”

The festive atmosphere was heightened by the enchanting Christmas carol performances of the St. Cecilia Choir from Rubaga Cathedral, creating a magical ambiance resonating with the true essence of the season.

Additionally, Da New Eagle’s Band contributed to the festivities with a stellar performance, enhancing the overall musical experience and leaving a lasting impression on those in attendance.

The event brought together a diverse assembly of politicians, urban residents, and supporters, symbolizing a united effort to transform Christmas into a time of happiness, inclusiveness, and constructive transformation in Kampala.
