Electoral Commission’s First Regional Office in Arua City Commences

Today, on Friday, 15th December 2023, the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the inaugural custom-built Regional Office of the Electoral Commission, West Nile Region, will commence at 10 am. The ceremony, set at the construction site on Plot 2, Municipal By-pass, Arua City, will include addresses from Government and Electoral Commission officials, Arua City authorities, and project stakeholders. Additionally, a ceremonial ground-breaking will symbolize the commencement of construction.

This initiative represents the initial step in the Commission’s plan to systematically construct regional offices throughout the country over the medium term. Uganda’s 146 districts and cities are currently grouped into twelve operational regions by the Commission.

In the Financial Year 2023/2024, the Government allocated Shs. 1.86bn for the construction of the first customized Regional Election Centre in Arua City for the West Nile Region.

The specialized regional office will serve various purposes, including administrative tasks, data processing, training, and functioning as a nomination and results tallying center. Paul Bukenya, the Electoral Commission spokesperson, emphasized that constructing regional offices aims to cut rental costs, enhance the efficiency of electoral services, and ensure cost-effective transportation and storage of election materials through customized storage facilities.

The construction, with a budget of Shs. 4.699bn, will be executed by the UPDF.
