Motorists Urged to Use Alternative Routes as Kampala-Masaka Highway Section Sinks

The Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety has issued a public advisory regarding the partial sinking of the road between Busega roundabout and Kyengera along the critical Kampala-Masaka Highway.

The situation has prompted urgent assessments by traffic police and engineers from the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA).

According to Micheal Kananura, the spokesperson for the traffic department, motorists traveling towards Masaka are strongly advised to use alternative routes to avoid potential congestion and delays. Specifically, drivers approaching Busega Roundabout are encouraged to divert through Nakawuka Road at Natete Traffic lights or opt for Mityana Road until further notice from UNRA.

This announcement follows a statement released by UNRA on Wednesday, acknowledging the erosion of the barricade foot along the Busega-Kyengera section of the Kampala-Masaka Highway.

According to UNRA, the erosion has resulted in damage to approximately 1.5 meters of the road pavement and carriageway near the affected embankment. The root cause of this issue is attributed to the rising water levels in the Lubigi swamp area.

UNRA says they have implemented measures to secure the site and has cordoned off the affected area in collaboration with the Uganda Police Force.

The statement released on their official X platform indicates that joint efforts of traffic police and UNRA engineers are currently underway to assess the extent of the damage and determine the necessary steps for rehabilitation.

The public is urged to stay informed about updates regarding the status of the road and any further instructions for motorists.

UNRA is expected to provide additional guidance once a comprehensive evaluation of the situation has been completed.

Commuters have been advised to exercise caution and patience during this period of adjustment and to comply with traffic diversions for their safety and the safety of others on the road.
