Military Court Remands 31, Including 8 Soldiers, Over Alleged Plot to Overthrow Gov’t
The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) General Court Martial, in Makindye, has remanded 31 individuals, including eight soldiers, on charges linked to an alleged plot to overthrow the legitimate government of Uganda.
The accused faced the court chaired by Brigadier General Freeman Robert Mugabe, where they were charged with alleged treachery as defined in the Uganda People’s Defense Forces Act.
The accused soldiers include Captain Denish Oola Oyaa, Lieutenant Benjamin Oduru, Warrant Officer 2 Oryek Sunday Jenaro, Sergeant Bernard Morris Leku (also known as Peter Anguadia), Corporal John Elatu, Corporal Ronald Keuber, Corporal David Olal, and Lance Corporal Moses Anyang, all associated with various military units.
Moreover, civilians, including plumbers, teachers, and a pastor, were also among the accused. Notable civilians in this case include pastors Judith Angwech and Simon Oyoma, social worker Daniel Owitti, builder Fabio Ocen, and others from diverse professions. The charges against them revolve around an alleged conspiracy to undermine the Ugandan government.
The court proceedings revealed that the suspects faced charges of treachery, posing a significant threat to national security.
The prosecution team, represented by Lt Col Raphael Mugisha, Lt Alex Lasto Mukhwana, and Private Regina Nanzala, informed the court that investigations were ongoing and requested an adjournment.
The UPDF General Court Martial, headed by Brigadier General Mugabe, remanded the accused until January 22, 2024, for further proceedings as the investigations continue.
