Uganda Netball Federation President Remanded in Luzira Prison
Sarah Babirye Kityo, the President of the Uganda Netball Federation has been remanded by the Anti-Corruption Court to Luzira Prison on charges of false accounting involving a staggering 186 million shillings.
The charges allege that, along with accomplices, she engaged in false accounting between November and December 2021 at the Uganda Netball Federation Office in Kampala District.
The prosecution claims that the funds, released by the National Council of Sports for the Pent series and African National Championship in Namibia, were manipulated with the intent to defraud.
The State Attorney, Gloria Inzikuru, revealed ongoing investigations involving multiple authorities such as the Inspector General of Government, Attorney General, Auditor General, and the Criminal Investigations Department.
Babirye vehemently denies the charges and has applied for bail through her legal representatives, who assert her continued presidency despite records stating otherwise. Her sureties include her husband, Daniel Ntare, a licensed sports agent, Adam Kayira, the Director of Kingston High School Kawempe, and her sister, Diana Tumukunde, a businesswoman. However, the prosecution objects to bail, citing discrepancies in the sureties’ residency and financial capacity.
This recent legal turmoil follows Babirye’s earlier remand in May on charges of obtaining money by false pretense. It is alleged that she, along with others, duped individuals into parting with significant sums under the false promise of facilitating trips to the United States. Despite these legal setbacks, Babirye maintains her innocence.
The court has set December 1st, 2023, for further bail application hearing, allowing time for the prosecution to verify the presented documents and scrutinize the sureties.
