Builder Arrested for Allegedly Exhuming Baby’s Remains

Denis Komakech, a 35-year-old builder from Lokona village, Nakapiripirit town council, has been arrested for allegedly digging up the remains of a baby girl in Kopedur village, Moruita Sub County.

Komakech’s wife, Mukurina Leese, experienced a miscarriage at seven months at Nakapiripirit Health Center III in August 2023. Due to a lack of land, the in-laws allowed the suspect to bury the child on their property.

However, tensions arose on November 27, 2023, when the in-laws demanded the removal of the child’s remains.

Faced with this demand, Komakech reportedly exhumed the body and took it to a river in the bush. Michael Longole, the Mt Moroto regional police spokesperson, confirmed Komakech’s arrest, stating that he was caught with something in a polythene bag after being reported by Teresa Lorot. Longole mentioned that investigations are ongoing (vide CRB308/2023), and once completed, Komakech will be charged for disturbing the peace of the dead.

In another incident in Nakapiripirit district, police are pursuing suspected warriors involved in the killing of 43-year-old Peter Loyep in Karinga village, Moruita Sub County.

Loyep was shot and killed with a bow and arrows during a suspected warrior attack on his home to steal chickens. Hearing noise from his chickens, Loyep went outside to check and was shot by unknown individuals suspected to be Karimojong warriors.

He suffered severe injuries on his left thigh near the private parts and was found unconscious. Rushed to Tokora Health Center IV, he was pronounced dead on Wednesday morning.

Security forces are actively searching for the suspects, and once apprehended, they will likely face charges related to Loyep’s killing.
