Karamoja Distribution: 97,552 Iron Sheets to Benefit 3,752 Individuals

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has initiated the distribution of a total of 97,552 iron sheets meant for 3,752 reformed Karimojong warriors and locals in the Karamoja sub-region.

While kicking off the exercise at OPM stores in Namanve, Nabbanja said the distribution will take place at the district headquarters, with beneficiaries required to sign an acknowledgment form for accountability purposes, utilizing the same forms submitted earlier during the distribution exercise.

She outlined guidelines for the distribution, with each beneficiary receiving 26 iron sheets, 20 for housing, 4 for the kitchen, and 2 for the toilet.

The Prime Minister clarified that the government did not purchase new iron sheets but instead, the distributed pieces are from existing stock.  She refuted media claims that the stores were empty, asserting that they are well-supplied.

“The store is full of iron sheets. We didn’t buy new ones. They showed that the stores were empty,” she said.

She acknowledged challenges arising from the Karamoja Iron-Sheets-Scandal investigation, leading to the loss of stored food. She pledged to present the issue to the cabinet for resolution.

“We have now lost tons of food. I will take the report to the cabinet, we see what we can do,” she said

The Chairperson of the Karamoja Parliamentary Group, Achia Remigo, suggested prioritizing those who have surrendered their guns to authorities for the initial distribution, emphasizing the significance of fulfilling promises made to the community.

State Minister for Karamoja Affairs, Hon Agnes Nandutu, commended Prime Minister Nabbanja for initiating the distribution and expressed happiness that the exercise had commenced.
