Hajji Kiyimba, Son Charged

Businessman Abdul Kiyimba and his son, Hamuza Kiyimba, faced charges of incitement to violence at the Law Development Centre Court in Kampala. The charges stemmed from an incident on November 24, 2023, at Gadaffi Mosque, where they allegedly intended to intimidate officials of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), including Mufti Sheikh Shaban Ramathan Mubajje. The Kiyimbas denied the charges before Grade One Magistrate Martins Kirya amidst heavy security deployment at the court premises.

Prosecutors claimed that Abdul Kiyimba and his son incited violence by shouting provocative statements against Mufti Mubajje during Juma Prayers at Old Kampala Mosque. The alleged intent was to mobilize the congregation against Mubajje for his role in the sale of Muslim land.

Despite the prosecution’s objection to bail, the accused were granted bail by Magistrate Kirya. Each was ordered to pay a cash bail of 1 million shillings, with a warning to remain peaceful during the bail period.

The origins of Kiyimba’s legal troubles trace back to his involvement in protesting a Commercial Court order authorizing the sale of eight UMSC properties to recover 18.9 billion shillings. The properties were part of a compensation dispute initiated by businessman Justus Kyabahwa, who sued UMSC for 18.9 million shillings.

Kiyimba’s arrest occurred during protests against the sale of Muslim properties. The case is adjourned until January 29, 2024, for mention, marking another chapter in a complex legal saga involving business disputes, property auctions, and accusations against UMSC leadership.
