Former Uganda Railways Corporation MD Granted Bail in Forgery Case
Stanley Ssendegeya, the former Managing Director of Uganda Railways Corporation (URC), has been granted bail by Buganda Road Court Grade one Magistrate Siena Owomugisha after spending five days in Luzira prison. Ssendegeya faced charges related to the alleged forgery of academic documents that facilitated his appointment to the URC position.
Released on Monday, Ssendegeya is required to pay a cash bail of Shs1 million and surrender his passport to the court. Additionally, his son, wife, and mother-in-law, acting as sureties, must execute a non-cash bond of Shs10 million each to secure his return to court when necessary.
The charges stem from his initial court appearance on November 22, 2023, following his arrest by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit. The arrest occurred as he was en route to Nakasero Hospital, where he reportedly receives daily medication for a stroke.
The prosecution alleges that Ssendegeya forged a CV, falsely claiming to possess a Master’s Degree in Business Administration in July 2020, with the intent to deceive. During the same month, he is accused of providing false information to Delloit Uganda Ltd, a recruitment firm located on Lumumba Avenue.
The court has scheduled Ssendegeya to report back on December 14, 2023, for the mention of the case. The developments highlight the legal proceedings surrounding the alleged falsification of academic credentials for a prominent public position.
