Prime Minister Unveils Cabinet Paper to Revive Uganda’s Tea Industry

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanjja announced the development of a Cabinet Paper aimed at revitalizing Uganda’s tea industry, addressing concerns raised by farmers during a plenary sitting on November 16, 2023.

Nabbanjja mentioned that low-quality tea and reduced prices stem from farmers’ inability to use fertilizers.

Member of Parliament Ephraim Biraaro expressed worry over Uganda’s tea prices, citing a significant gap compared to neighboring countries. He attributed this to the lack of a tea policy and industry regulation. Biraaro called for urgent government attention to address farmers’ challenges, particularly the drastic drop in garden-to-factory tea prices.

MP Annet Katusiime highlighted the financial struggles of farmers who cannot afford fertilizers and face issues with the quality of available products. She urged government intervention in addressing the presence of fake fertilizers in the market. Katusiime also suggested temporary reductions in electricity tariffs to assist tea processing factories.

In response, Prime Minister Nabbanjja outlined short-term measures outlined in the Cabinet Paper, including subsidies on fertilizers to ensure tea quality. She assured ongoing efforts to support both tea farmers and processing factories.

Minister Raphael Magyezi acknowledged President Museveni’s directive and stated that the comprehensive policy would address concerns of farmers, processors, and other stakeholders. Magyezi pledged to return to the House with detailed measures outlined in the Cabinet Paper.
