Community Demands Justice as 24-Year-Old Dies in Alcohol Contest
Police in Namisindwa are looking for an individual responsible for orchestrating a tragic alcohol drinking challenge that led to the untimely death of a 24-year-old man.
The suspect, identified as Augustus Wete, is at the center of an investigation into the events that transpired during the ill-fated contest. Wete, a local trader at Riverside trading center in Bukiabi, enticed participants with a monetary prize of Uganda Shillings 10,000 for successfully completing the drinking feat.
Locals allege that the competition involved the deceased, Rober Welikhe a common drunkard in Sikhendu village, Sikhendu parish, Bukiabi sub-county.
The challenge involved the consumption of 12 bottles of Kakasa Kombucha, an alcoholic beverage from Kenya.
Tragically, Welikhe, progressed until the 8th bottle. At that point, he collapsed, displaying alarming symptoms such as foaming from the mouth and nose. Concerned residents saw Welikhe rushed to Lwakhakha Mercy Clinic in an attempt to save his life however, he succumbed to the effects of the challenge during transit.
Authorities are diligently working to apprehend Wete and others involved in the organization of the perilous drinking competition.
The grief-stricken locals expressed their collective rage by placing Welikhe’s body at Wete’s residence, to demand for justice and accountability.
