Three Fishermen Drown While Evading Fisheries Protection Unit Arrest
Three fishermen have lost their lives, allegedly drowning while attempting to escape arrest by the Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU).
According to Corporal Siraj Katosi, the commander of the operation, the four fishermen were apprehended by FPU personnel patrolling the lake for using illegal fishing gear.
He says they planned to take the suspects to their detachment at Kasio landing site. However, fearing detention, all four fishermen jumped into the lake. Only Muzamil Jakisa managed to swim ashore, while Richard Onen’s body was found floating near Mbegu landing site. Two bodies remain missing.
