Deputy Speaker Engaging Opposition Over Parliament Boycott
The Deputy Speaker of Parliament in Uganda, Thomas Tayebwa, is trying to resolve a problem between the government and the Opposition. The Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs), led by their leader, Hon. Mathias Mpuuga, left a parliamentary meeting last week because they were upset about human rights abuses against their leaders and supporters. They also wanted the government to explain what happened to some of their missing members.
Deputy Speaker Tayebwa says he has been talking to leaders from both the government and the Opposition to help them have a conversation and make progress.
Deputy Speaker Tayebwa mentioned that while the parliament can still do its work without the protesting MPs, he feels uncomfortable when the house isn’t complete. He wants everyone to come back to work, and he hopes they can resolve the issue soon.
The Deputy Speaker wants everyone to work together in Parliament again and is trying to make that happen.
The opposition is demanding a government explanation over human rights violations
